Seamless Rail Connectivity at WQ6

The railway siding for the WQ6 berth at Visakhapatnam Port plays a crucial role in enhancing the port’s cargo handling efficiency. The siding is designed to facilitate seamless movement of dry bulk cargo, ensuring a smooth transition between the berth and inland destinations. Key features include:

  • Dedicated Rail Connectivity: The siding is integrated with the Indian Railways network, enabling efficient transportation of goods to various parts of the country.
  • Capacity and Infrastructure: The railway siding is equipped to handle high volumes of cargo, supporting the berth’s capacity of 5.18 MMTPA (Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum).
  • Mechanization and Efficiency: Advanced cargo handling equipment, such as mobile hoppers and cranes, ensures quick loading and unloading of goods onto rail wagons.
  • Environmental Considerations: Measures like dust suppression systems are in place to minimize environmental impact during cargo handling operations.

These features make the WQ6 berth railway siding a vital component of Visakhapatnam Port’s logistics network, contributing to its status as a key hub for maritime trade

Strengthening Road Links for Smarter Cargo Flow

The Visakhapatnam Port Authority has been actively working on enhancing road connectivity to support the operations of the WQ6 berth. The port is strategically located on the Golden Quadrilateral and connects to NH-16, which links Chennai and Kolkata. Key developments include:

  • A 12-kilometer, 4-lane port connectivity road project under the Bharatmala initiative, which has been completed.
  • Upgrading the existing 4-lane road to a 6-lane road for better connectivity from the east breakwater to Sheelanagar Junction, with work currently in progress.
  • Development of adequate road connectivity from Sheelanagar to Anakapalli-Sabbavaram/ Pendurthi-Anandhapuram road, for which tenders have been invited.
  • Improvement and rehabilitation of the Ambedkar and Nehru Centenary flyovers, which have been completed.
  • Construction of a flyover or underpass at the Vizag Airport Junction to ensure smooth movement of container trailers to and from the Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) set up at NH-16, with work ongoing.

These initiatives aim to streamline cargo movement, reduce congestion, and enhance the overall efficiency of the port’s logistics network.
